The 8.136 belongs to the G range that MAN and Volkswagen jointly developed from 1979 into the early 1990s as medium-duty trucks in the 6- to 10-tonne class and sold in parallel under both brand names. The type designation follows MAN's scheme: the first number before the point names the gross weight in tonnes, the number after it the engine output in hp – the 8.136 thus stands for the 8-tonne class with 136 hp. It was powered by the six-cylinder diesel from MAN's own D range.

The G range filled the gap for MAN and Volkswagen between light vans and the heavy truck ranges and targeted municipalities, hauliers and trade businesses looking for a manoeuvrable truck with a cab derived from van production. After Volkswagen's withdrawal from the cooperation in the early 1990s, MAN continued the range on its own at first.
