Allis-Chalmers Gleaner – combine harvesters from Independence, Missouri, 1955 to 1985 under Allis-Chalmers: the Gleaner E to the Gleaner N7 Series III, 108 to 160 kW, Allis-Chalmers and Cummins engines

Gleaner is an American combine-harvester brand from Independence, Missouri, that belonged to Allis-Chalmers from 1955 to 1985. The range follows an alphabetical type logic: early letters such as the E model of the 1950s were followed in the 1970s and 1980s by the larger K, L, M and N ranges, with the Series II or Series III suffix each marking a revised generation, as with the Gleaner N5 Series III and Gleaner N7 Series III. The early models ran on Allis-Chalmers' own engines, the later N ranges also on Cummins diesels.

The register lists here 6 versions with 108 to 160 kW, or 36 to 220 hp, from Allis-Chalmers and Cummins engines.

Gleaner combines were distinguished by their transverse-mounted threshing unit, which differed from the classic longitudinal layout of many competitors such as John Deere and Massey Ferguson and was regarded as more compact and easier to maintain; the brand was widespread chiefly in the American Midwest, where Allis-Chalmers, the farm-equipment maker from Milwaukee, held a strong position.

When buying these sometimes decades-old machines used, the condition of the concave and the threshing and separating units, the condition of the feeder house and reel, corrosion on sheet metal and frame and, on the Cummins-engined models, the operating-hours history all count; spare parts for the old Allis-Chalmers units are today only available through specialist vintage-parts dealers.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.

  • Load the hydraulics and watch for sag.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
