The register lists 5 versions with 55 to 80 kW from 2,383 to 2,461 cm³ displacement, kerb weights of 1,865 to 2,490 kg, gross vehicle weights of 2,800 to 3,180 kg, lengths of 5,590 to 5,740 mm and widths of 1,930 to 2,040 mm.

As the lightest line of the first-generation LT, the 28 competed with the Mercedes-Benz T1/T2, Ford Transit and Fiat Ducato in the 2.8 to 3.5-tonne van segment. Tradespeople and haulage firms used the panel van for parcel and general cargo, while construction and municipal fleets favoured the double-cab pickup; its production run alongside the second-generation LT, already introduced in 1996, shows how long the robust first design held its ground in the market.

When buying used, check for rust on wheel arches, sills, door bottoms and the load floor, as well as the condition of the injection pump and timing belt on the five-cylinder diesels. The five-speed gearbox and brakes should be checked for wear from frequent loads near the weight limit, and pickups additionally need their load bed and tow hitch inspected.
