The Toyota Tacoma is the pickup line Toyota has built specifically for the North American market since 1995, first in Fremont, California, and later also in San Antonio, Texas; it replaced the Hilux-related model sold there until then as the Toyota Pickup. The SR5 trim has traditionally marked a mid-level equipment grade at Toyota, while TRD stands for Toyota Racing Development and covers off-road packages such as TRD Sport and TRD Off-Road; Trail Hunter adds a version built for long expedition drives with reinforced suspension. V6-badged models carry the six-cylinder petrol engine, while the remaining variants come with four-cylinders.

On used examples, on the older generations the condition of the ladder frame, known for rusting through, matters, along with automatic or manual transmission, the condition of the transfer case on 4x4 models, the suspension on TRD versions, and the bed and tow hitch; parts run through the Toyota network.
