The FJ variants are regarded as exceptionally rugged, easily repaired off-roaders for expedition and utility use and are valued worldwide, particularly in Africa, the Middle East and Australia, for hard, continuous use off sealed roads, where simple mechanical technology has an advantage over complex electronics.

When buying used, key points are rust on the frame, chassis members, wheel arches and floor, the condition of the transfer case and differential locks, the history of engine and clutch work, and for older variants the tightness of the carburettor and fuel system; spare parts are widely available through Toyota and Land Cruiser specialists, as are body panels on the aftermarket.
