Studebaker, founded in 1852 as a wagon builder in South Bend, Indiana, entered motor-vehicle manufacturing early and became one of the most important US truck suppliers during the Second World War: the six-wheel US6 truck was built from 1941 in more than 190,000 units and went in large numbers under Lend-Lease to the Soviet Union, where the Studebaker name became a byword for dependable military equipment. After the war Studebaker built civilian trucks in the K, R and later E series, until the company ended truck production in 1964, two years before car production in the US also ended.
