Multicar of Waltershausen in Thuringia has built compact four-wheel-drive utility vehicles for municipalities, landscaping and works depots since the 1950s and operated as VEB Multicar within the East German combine economy before the plant was privatised after reunification and became part of the Hako Group. The M22, M25, M26, M27, M30 and M31 model families stand for successive size classes and generations, usually with all-wheel drive and interchangeable attachments for sweeping, mowing and winter service. Multicar vehicles are a fixture of German works depots and parks departments, competing there with the Unimog, Reform and Aebi for municipal carrier vehicles; their all-wheel drive, tight turning circle and broad range of attachments make them especially sought after for inner-city cleaning and winter service.
On these carrier vehicles, operating hours and wear on the attachment hydraulics, the condition of the all-wheel drive and axles, frame corrosion and the function of the tipping hydraulics all matter; parts run through the Multicar and Hako dealer network, which is somewhat limited for the East German model years.
