With the Santa Fe, Hyundai successfully entered the mid-size SUV segment in the early 2000s, pricing it below established Japanese and European rivals. The turbocharged CRDi diesel engines with variable geometry were considered advanced for their time and contributed significantly to the model's sales success.

Buying used, on the CRDi diesel engines the condition of the injectors and turbocharger and adherence to the timing chain service intervals matter; on four-wheel-drive versions, the condition of the transfer case and clutch packs. Underbody corrosion, the function of the automatic transmission and the interior electronics should also be checked; spare parts are well supplied through the Hyundai dealer network.
