Willys Jeep – from the wartime MB to the civilian CJ line: CJ-3A to CJ-5, M38A1 and pick-up, four- to eight-cylinder engines from 2.2 to 5.7 litres, 840 to 2,955 kg gross vehicle weight
The Willys MB is the American off-road vehicle of the Second World War, built from 1941 by Willys-Overland in Toledo, Ohio, and under licence also by Ford; after the war Willys developed the civilian CJ line (Civilian Jeep) from it. The 1945 CJ-2A carried over the MB's chassis and engine, the CJ-3A and CJ-3B followed with a taller bonnet for the upright "Hurricane" four-cylinder, and the CJ-5 from 1954, with a more rounded body, stayed in production until 1983. The M38A1 was the parallel military version with rounded fenders. Later civilian and restored vehicles received larger six-cylinder and V8 engines of over five litres alongside the original Go-Devil and Hurricane four-cylinders, as well as the factory pick-up body.

The Willys Jeep is regarded as the forerunner of the modern off-roader, and its short wheelbase, live-axle layout and selectable four-wheel drive shaped the whole vehicle type through to today's Jeep Wrangler; it is restored and used worldwide by collectors, militaria enthusiasts and off-road fans.
