Volvo FM — the medium cab, the range's most versatile member
FM means forward control medium: forward-control truck with a medium-height cab. The FM therefore sits between the low FL and the tall FH — and that middle position makes it the range's most versatile vehicle. It will run long haul if it has to, and still passes under gateways where an FH stops.

The difference from the FH is not a difference in power. The two share large parts of their engineering; what separates them is cab height, entry and frame design. Anyone working mainly regionally, carrying bodies or operating a crane usually finds the FM the more suitable vehicle — not the weaker one.
The FMX grew out of the FM: the same M plus an X for Xtreme. It is the construction and off-road version with a reinforced frame, greater ground clearance and a tougher front end. Anyone looking for a tipper, mixer or hooklift should search both abbreviations — the listings overlap.
On older vehicles the number after the abbreviation is displacement in litres: FM7, FM9, FM10, FM12. Newer listings give output in horsepower there instead. These two readings run side by side on the used market and are the commonest Volvo mix-up of all.
When buying used, look at the body, not just the chassis. An FM with a crane has had a different life from one in long-haul work — power take-off hours often say more about it than the odometer.
