The F range formed the backbone of Volvo's medium and heavy truck programme for decades before being gradually replaced from the late 1980s by the FL, FH and FM; it thus represents an era in which Volvo, alongside Scania, established itself as a leading Scandinavian commercial vehicle maker. The B-series types that also appear in the model list stem instead from Volvo's bus chassis programme and show how broadly the Class N2 grouping is drawn — purely by gross vehicle weight, regardless of the vehicle's actual purpose.

On these older Volvo trucks, what counts is corrosion on the frame, cab mounts and load bed, the condition of the engine and mechanical injection pump, wear on the clutch and manual gearbox, and — for vehicles of this age — a limited parts supply organised through specialists and vintage-vehicle dealers.
