VW Crafter – first a Sprinter twin (2006–2016), then its own design: 2.5 TDI, 2.0 TDI, weight classes 28 to 50
The Crafter replaced the LT in 2006 and in its first generation was a joint product with the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter: the same body from Ludwigsfelde and Düsseldorf, but Volkswagen engines. Until 2011 that meant the 2.5 litre five-cylinder TDI with 65 to 120 kW – recorded many times in the register as '2.5 TDI 65 KW' to '120 KW' – then the 2.0 litre four-cylinder TDI, partly with twin turbocharging. In 2017 the second generation arrived as an independent Volkswagen design from the new plant in Września, Poland, identical to the MAN TGE and for the first time with front-wheel drive, 4Motion all-wheel drive and, from 2018, as the e-Crafter.

The type numbers 28, 30, 35, 46 and 50 stand for the gross weight in hundreds of kilograms – a Crafter 28 is 2.8 t, a 35 is 3.5 t. Then follow body and length/height (L1 H1 to L3 H3), DC for crew cab, PU for pickup, ASG or AUT for the automated gearbox. The combination of low loading sill, tall cargo space and the 3.5 t class on a car licence makes the Crafter the typical vehicle of couriers, tradespeople and motorhome converters.
On used five-cylinders, injectors and dual-mass flywheel are the cost items, on first-generation 2.0 TDIs the timing chain and EGR cooler; the second generation is mainly known for electronics and AdBlue issues.
