Tata Hitachi is the joint venture of India's Tata group with Hitachi Construction Machinery, founded in 1984 as Telcon in Jamshedpur and today, with plants in Kharagpur and Dharwad, India's largest excavator maker. The machines are Hitachi designs built for the Indian market and export to South Asia and Africa: the older EX110, EX200 and EX350 correspond to the Hitachi EX generation of the 1990s, the ZAXIS models from 110 to 870 to the Zaxis range from 2001. The number gives the weight class in hundreds of kilograms – ZAXIS 210 about 21 t, ZAXIS 470 about 47 t, ZAXIS 870 about 87 t – LC the long undercarriage with larger footprint, H and K version variants for quarry and earthmoving duty on the Indian market, MTH the mining version.

The register lists 27 versions with 59.7 to 397 kW from Isuzu engines of 4,330 to 15,682 cm³ – 4BG1 and 6BG1 in the small and medium, 6HK1 and 6WG1 in the big models, a Tata 697 engine in the EX110 – torque from 289 to 2,250 Nm at 1,800 to 2,300 rpm and operating weights from 10,700 to 84,000 kg.
The Isuzu engines and Hitachi hydraulics are identical to the Japanese Zaxis; the difference lies in the equipment, laid out for heat, dust and simpler maintenance, and in the price. The ZAXIS 870 at 84 t is the mining machine of the Jharkhand coalfields.
Used Tata Hitachi excavators are rare outside South Asia; when buying, operating hours, play in slew ring and boom pins, undercarriage condition, leak-free hydraulics and parts supply, which runs through both networks for Isuzu engines and Hitachi hydraulics, are what count.
