Steyr, which emerged from the Steyr-Werke in Steyr, Upper Austria, had built commercial vehicles since the 1920s and became Steyr-Daimler-Puch after the 1934 merger with Austro-Daimler and Puch; the truck division was known above all for off-road all-wheel-drive vehicles. The type codes in the register follow a fixed pattern: the leading number gives roughly the tonnage or power class, the letter the body type – S for tractor units, K for tippers, M and L for other body variants – followed by the axle formula (4X2, 4X4, 6X4, 6X6, 8X4); suffixes such as AKK or P denote chassis or drivetrain details. In 1990 MAN took a majority stake in the truck division, and since 2001 the Steyr plant has belonged entirely to MAN, today building components and cabs for the MAN truck range.

On used trucks, frame and transfer case, condition of the four-wheel-drive hubs and differential locks, brakes and axles count, and on tippers the tipper-body hydraulics; parts today run mostly through the MAN network, only to a limited extent for older model years.
