Robur LO – the collective page of the East German lorry from Zittau: the LO 2002 as van, flatbed and tipper body, air-cooled four- to six-cylinder diesels, 3,246 to 3,345 cm³, gross weight of 3,500 to 5,500 kg

The Robur LO 2002 is the light lorry from VEB Robur-Werke Zittau, which emerged from the nationalisation of the Phänomen-Werke previously based there and, from 1961 until production ended in 1991, built East Germany's standard 3.5-tonne-class lorry. The LO served as a universal chassis for vans, flatbeds, tippers, minibuses and special bodies such as fire and workshop vehicles, and was exported far beyond East Germany to practically every Eastern-Bloc country. It was powered by air-cooled four- and six-cylinder diesel engines built in-house in Zittau.

The register lists here 7 versions with 3,246 to 3,345 cm³ from four- to six-cylinders, unladen weights from 2,710 to 3,410 kg, gross weights from 3,500 to 5,500 kg, lengths from 5,300 to 5,760 mm and widths from 2,200 to 2,460 mm.

Alongside the heavier IFA W50, the Robur LO was one of East Germany's most widely built lorries and shaped trades, agriculture, fire brigades and the National People's Army; after 1990 the brand quickly disappeared from the reunified German market but stayed in service for years in Eastern Europe and the successor states of the Soviet Union.

On surviving LOs, the frame and brake system, corrosion on cab and flatbed, the condition of engine and clutch on the air-cooled diesel, and the originality of the East German-style markings and bodies count; parts today circulate almost exclusively through enthusiast circles and classic-vehicle dealers.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.

  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
