Renault Master – four generations since 1980, twin of the Opel Movano and Nissan Interstar: dCi engines, T28 to T35, L1H1 to L4H3
The Master is Renault's large van above the Trafic, built since 1980 in four generations: Master I until 1997, Master II from 1997 to 2010 – for the first time identical to the Opel/Vauxhall Movano and Nissan Interstar – Master III from 2010 to 2024 with front- or rear-wheel drive and twin rear wheels up to 4.5 t, and Master IV since 2024 with much improved aerodynamics and an electric version. The engines of the second and third generation are called dTi and dCi: the 1.9 litre diesel, the 2.2 and 2.5 litre dCi, and in the third generation the 2.3 litre dCi throughout, with 100 to over 170 hp.

In the register the designation reads as gross weight plus body: 2.8T or T28 stands for 2.8 t, T33 for 3.3 t, T35 for 3.5 t, L1 to L4 for wheelbase and length, H1 to H3 for roof height, DC or 'Dubbele Cabine' for the crew cab – many records come from Dutch registrations. Values run from 1,695 to 3,340 kg unladen, 2,207 to 3,510 kg gross and 4,899 to 7,620 mm long; displacements lie between 1,870 and 2,983 cm³, always four cylinders, recorded outputs between 59 and 125 kW.
The variety of panel van, chassis, dropside and tipper makes the Master the basis for refrigerated boxes, motorhomes and municipal vehicles; front-wheel drive keeps the loading sill low, rear-wheel drive carries the heavy bodies.
On used 2.3 dCi engines, injectors, turbocharger and particulate filter condition matter, and on front-drive models the driveshafts and wheel bearings under constant load.

What to check before buying
