New Holland TN (1997–2007) – the three-cylinder compact tractor from Jesi: TN 55 to TN 75, the number as hp class, S for rear-wheel, D for four-wheel drive, A for the second generation, V, N and F for vineyard

The TN range was New Holland's compact tractor of the first blue generation: introduced in 1997 as successor to the Fiat 66 and 86 ranges, built at the Jesi plant in the Marche, the old Fiat plant for small tractors that still builds New Holland's specialist tractors today. The type logic: TN marks the range, the number the hp class – TN 55 about 55 hp, TN 65 65 hp, TN 75 75 hp – the letters drive and layout: S stands for rear-wheel drive (semplice), D for four-wheel drive (doppia trazione), A for the second generation from 2003 with new cab and engine, V for the vineyard version about one metre wide, N for narrow track and F for orchard; SA and DA are the A generation with rear- and four-wheel drive, VA the vineyard A. The engine in all models is the three-cylinder of 2.9 litres from Fiat's 8035 series, turbocharged in the Turbo versions.

The register lists 9 versions with 44 to 60 kW from the three-cylinder of 2,900 to 2,931 cm³ at 2,300 rpm, torque from 215 to 275 Nm, unladen weights from 2,200 to 2,970 kg, lengths from 3,540 to 4,300 mm, widths from 1,070 mm on the vineyard version and heights from 2,230 to 2,476 mm.

The TN became the standard tractor of its class in Southern Europe, in orchards and vineyards and on horse farms – simple, agile, with mechanical injection; in 2007 the T4000 range followed in the same logic.

On used tractors, operating hours, clutch and shuttle, four-wheel-drive clutch on D models, the condition of hydraulics and cab, on V/N/F the frame and steering geometry count; parts run through CNH.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Load the hydraulics and watch for sag.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
