LeTourneau wheel loaders L-950 to L-2350 – the world's largest wheel loaders from Longview, Texas: diesel-electric drive with wheel motors, the L-2350 at 258 t and 2,300 hp, with Komatsu since 2017, 783 to 1,491 kW
LeTourneau of Longview, Texas, built the world's largest wheel loaders – and still does so under the Komatsu name today. The company goes back to Robert Gilmour LeTourneau, the earthmoving pioneer who invented the diesel-electric drive with electric motors in the wheel hubs in the 1950s; his successors used it for loaders that fill haul trucks of the 200 to 400 tonne class in three to four passes. The type logic: L stands for Loader, the number orders the size in ascending order – L-950 and L-1150 the smaller ones at about 100 to 120 t, L-1350 and L-1850 the mid-range, L-2350 the giant with 258 t operating weight, 40 m³ bucket and 2,300 hp, in the Guinness Book since 2000 as the largest wheel loader – High Lift the version with extended lift frame for taller trucks. The engines are Cummins QST30, QSK45 and QSK60 and MTU 16V 2000 of 30 to 45 litres driving a generator; electric motors in each wheel provide propulsion.

The register lists 10 versions with 783 to 1,491.4 kW from twelve- and sixteen-cylinders of 30,496 to 44,999 cm³ at 1,800 to 1,900 rpm and operating weights from 106,595 to 271,250 kg.
In 2011 Joy Global bought LeTourneau's mining division, in 2017 Joy Global went to Komatsu, and the loaders have since run as Komatsu WE1350 to WE2350 – the same machines from the same plant in Longview.
Used LeTourneau loaders are mining capital goods; when buying, the overhaul history of engine, generator and wheel motors, frame and lift frame for cracks, hydraulics and the tyres, which cost six figures on these machines, are what count.

What to check before buying
- Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
- Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
- Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
- Load the hydraulics and watch for sag.
- Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
