LDV – Leyland DAF Vans – was formed in 1993 from the commercial-vehicle plant at Washwood Heath near Birmingham, previously trading as Freight Rover and Leyland DAF; independent vehicle production at the plant ended in 2009. The LDV brand name has since been continued by changing importers, today for vehicles from the Chinese SAIC Maxus group. The Convoy traced its roots to the Sherpa van, introduced in 1974 as a successor to the Morris J4, which the works progressively updated under Freight Rover and Leyland DAF ownership before the Convoy name arrived.

For decades LDV occupied the mid-size van class between small vans and trucks, competing directly with the Ford Transit, Mercedes Sprinter and Volkswagen LT, but ultimately could not hold its own permanently against those established brands. Fleet operators and tradesmen valued the range chiefly for its straightforward mechanicals and relatively low purchase cost.
Buying used, check for rust on sliding-door tracks, wheel arches and the load floor, the condition of the turbocharger and injection pump on the diesel engines, and the availability of body parts, which is limited since production ended and often requires specialist dealers.
