LDV emerged in 1993 from the privatisation of Leyland DAF Vans and at first built the licensed Alfa Romeo-based van as the Convoy at the Washwood Heath plant in Birmingham, before the brand launched its first own large van, the Maxus, in 2004. After the 2009 insolvency, the Chinese state group SAIC bought the tooling and naming rights and has built the Maxus in China ever since, now as a standalone brand. The model designation gives the gross-weight class in tonnes before the slash (2.8, 3.2 or 3.5), HR, MR and LR stand for high, medium and low roof, DC for the double cab; the Maxus is powered throughout by the 2.5-litre four-cylinder diesel from the Italian supplier VM Motori.

The Maxus was LDV's attempt to hold its own against the Ford Transit, Mercedes Sprinter and VW LT with its own, modern large van, after the brand had always relied on licensed builds before; under SAIC the model was developed further and still forms the basis of the Chinese Maxus commercial-vehicle range, which is now also returning to Europe.
On a used British-built Maxus, corrosion on the sills and load floor, the condition of the VM Motori diesel and timing chain, the turbocharger and intercooler, and the electrics and central locking count above all; parts supply for the old LDV vehicles is limited and runs through specialist dealers.
