Komatsu built forklifts from 1955 at its Tochigi plant and was for decades one of the big Japanese suppliers; in 2017 the forklift business merged into Mitsubishi Logisnext, the combination of the forklift divisions of Mitsubishi, Nichiyu, TCM and Unicarriers. The type code is a formula that appears line by line in the register: F for Forklift, the second letter for the drive – D diesel, G gas (gasoline/LPG), B battery, S and R for reach trucks and warehouse equipment – the number for the capacity in hundreds of kilograms (FD25 carries 2.5 t, FD160 16 t), then equipment letters: S for the standard version, H for high performance, T for the torque-converter version, M for the compact electric layout, E for the reinforced heavy-truck version; the digit after the hyphen gives the generation, -7, -8, -14 and -17 on the combustion trucks, -3 and -6 on the electrics.

The register lists 38 versions with capacities from 1,134 to 15,876 kg, service weights from 2,695 to 17,051 kg and widths from 966 to 2,481 mm; the combustion trucks have four- and six-cylinders of 2,065 to 6,489 cm³ – Nissan K21 and K25, TB45 and Isuzu 6BG1 in the heavy trucks – at 1,950 to 2,950 rpm, the electrics run on 36 V.
The FD100 to FD160 are the heavy trucks for ports, steel and timber, the FB and FS models the indoor machines; Komatsu's forklifts shared engines with Nissan and Isuzu, which eases parts supply today.
On used trucks, operating hours, play in the mast, the condition of chains and forks, battery age and charge cycles on electrics and, on combustion trucks, the availability of engine parts through Nissan, Isuzu and Logisnext dealers are what count.
