The register lists here 20 versions with 55 to 129 kW rated output at 2,050 to 2,200 rpm, all from four-cylinders with 92 to 106 mm bore and 112 to 135 mm stroke. Maximum torque ranges from 327 to 690 Nm at 1,150 to 1,500 rpm. Among the emission stages, Tier 4 (Final or Phase-in) and Interim Tier 4 are balanced with 7 versions each, Tier 3 follows with 6; the turbocharger is mostly variable-geometry (14 of 20). 19 of the 20 versions are certified for all US states including California, one only for states outside California.

With the 444/448 engine family, JCB Power Systems supplies, alongside its own construction machinery, numerous outside makers of compact loaders, telehandlers and small construction machinery with no engine production of their own in this power segment; two JCB vehicles fitted with the 444 engine set the diesel land-speed record in 2006 under the name JCB Dieselmax.

On a used purchase, operating hours and the service history of the injection system, the condition of the variable-geometry or waste-gate turbocharger, the tightness of the charge-air ducting, and on Tier 4 Final versions the function of the exhaust aftertreatment matter; spares run through the JCB dealer network.
