Iveco was formed in 1975 from the merger of the commercial-vehicle divisions of Fiat, OM and Lancia with the French maker Unic and the German Magirus-Deutz into the Industrial Vehicles Corporation, based in Turin. The AS440T range belongs to the Stralis/Trakker family: AS stands for Active Space, the large flat-floor long-haul cab with full sleeping comfort, as opposed to AD (Active Day, day cab without bunk) and AT (Active Time, mid cab with one bunk). The number 440 gives the gross weight class of around 44 tonnes, as needed for tractor units in heavy and long-haul transport with multi-axle trailers. Iveco also offered the AS440T range with liquefied-natural-gas drive (LNG), one of the early applications of gas drive in heavy long-haul transport.
