Hyundai Galloper – the licence-built Mitsubishi Pajero derivative as a three- and five-door: 2.5-litre turbodiesel with around 73 kW, gross weight up to 2,810 kg

The Hyundai Galloper is an off-roader that Hyundai built under licence between 1991 and 2003 on the basis of the first- and second-generation Mitsubishi Pajero, with its own styling front and rear but largely Mitsubishi engineering for the chassis, four-wheel drive and engines. It was offered as a three-door and as a five-door estate (STW), identifiable by suffixes such as "4X4" for the selectable four-wheel drive.

The register lists here 8 versions with around 73 kW from four-cylinder engines of 2,470 to 2,476 cm³, unladen weights from 1,770 to 1,950 kg, gross weights from 2,510 to 2,810 kg, lengths from 4,000 to 4,635 mm and widths from 1,680 to 1,770 mm.

The Galloper was Hyundai's entry into the European off-roader market of the 1990s and positioned itself as an affordable alternative to the Pajero itself, popular with tradespeople and hunters for its ruggedness and simple engineering at a lower price. In Germany and Austria the Galloper was sold through authorised Hyundai dealers and remained a niche model with a loyal following until production ended in 2003.

On used examples, check the condition of the 2.5-litre turbodiesel and its injection pump, the transfer case and front-axle freewheeling hubs, rust on the frame and wheel arches, and the brakes; spare parts, thanks to the Mitsubishi kinship, are sometimes also available through Pajero parts dealers.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
