Between mini and standard excavator lies Hitachi's 5 to 8 tonne class – the machines for urban sewer work, house connections and landscaping, where a 3-tonner is too weak and a 14-tonner no longer fits in the street. The EX60-5 of the 1990s stands at the start, the Zaxis models from 2001 form the programme: ZX50U to ZX85USB. The number gives the weight class in hundreds of kilograms (ZX70 about 7 t, ZX85 8.5 t), the letters the tail – U for the short-tail version, US for Ultra Short with an even smaller swing radius, USB for Ultra Short with dozer blade – LC the long undercarriage, K a market variant, -3 the third generation. The ZX75US-A is a version with offset boom.

The Ultra Short layout with the upper structure inside the track width has become Hitachi's standard in this class because the excavators work beside moving traffic; the offset boom allows digging along walls without repositioning.
On used machines, operating hours, play in boom, stick and offset-boom bearings, undercarriage condition (steel or rubber tracks), leak-free cylinders and the auxiliary hydraulics for breaker and tiltrotator are what count.
