Hesston Corporation of Kansas was originally a maker of hay and harvesting equipment and entered the tractor market in the 1970s through a cooperation with Fiat Trattori: the tractors sold as Fiat-Hesston were technically largely identical to the Italian Fiat models, renamed for the North American market. The type logic follows Fiat's system: the first number roughly gives the hp class, the second number after the hyphen the range generation – for instance the 66 series in the 45-66, 60-66 and 80-66 – DT stands for Dual Traction, meaning four-wheel drive, and the suffix orchard or High-Clearance marks narrow or raised-clearance versions for orchards and row crops. After Fiat's farm-equipment division passed through later corporate restructuring, the Hesston heritage also moved into the AGCO group in the 1990s.
