As an Aerial work platforms, the Haulotte Optimum 8 belongs to the Haulotte Scissor Lift series.

It will not go faster than 5 km/h — a working pace, not a travelling one. Unladen, it tips the scales at 1,420 kg.

Haulotte scissor lifts Compact, Optimum, H SX and HS RT – electric for the hall, diesel for the site: the number logic by metres and by feet/inches, 1.3 to 7.5 t

Haulotte of L'Horme near Saint-Étienne is Europe's largest maker of aerial work platforms and number three worldwide behind JLG and Genie; scissor lifts are the company's volume product. The register shows four families: Compact and Optimum are the electric scissor lifts for halls, warehouses and interior fit-out, H SX and HS RT the diesel rough-terrain lifts for construction sites. The numbers follow two conventions: in Europe the number gives the working height in metres – Compact 8, 10 and 12, Optimum 6 and 8, H12SX to H18SX – in the USA platform height in feet and platform width in inches: a Compact 2032 is 20 ft high and 32 in wide, an Optimum 1930E 19 ft and 30 in, an HS3388RT 33 ft and 88 in. Suffixes say more: E or AC for electric drive, DX for diesel four-wheel drive, RT for rough terrain, RTE for the electric rough-terrain version, N for the narrow, W for the wide platform, L for the extended version.

The register lists 39 versions with service weights from 1,270 to 7,490 kg, lengths from 1,730 to 5,330 mm, widths from 760 to 2,286 mm and platform capacities from 230 to 565 kg; the diesel models deliver 18 to 24.5 kW.

The 760 mm wide Compact 8 fits through any standard door – that is the class electricians and drywall fitters hire; the HS5388RT at 5.3 m long with extension deck carries façade fitters and material to 16 m.

On used lifts, operating hours, battery condition on electric models (lead-acid traction batteries age by charge cycles), play in scissor pins and rails, hydraulic tightness, the function of tilt and overload sensors and a valid periodic inspection, without which no lift may be hired out or operated, are what count.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
