From 1957 to 1979, across seven generations, the Ranchero combined a passenger-car body with an open load bed and is regarded as one of the founders of the North American coupé-utility type. The first generation still stood on Ford's large full-size platform, in 1960 the Ranchero moved to the compact Falcon, in 1966/67 to the shared Falcon-Fairlane platform, from 1968 to the larger Fairlane/Torino and from 1972 until production ended in 1979 finally to the Torino and LTD II. Names such as GT and Squire mark the sporty and wood-effect-trimmed top versions respectively, while the base versions served as plain working vehicles on farms and in trades businesses.

On used examples, depending on the generation, rust on the load bed, sills and wheel arches, the condition of the frame or unitary body, the engine and gearbox condition proper to that platform, and on GT and Squire versions the originality of the chrome and wood-effect trim count; parts run through the wide US classic-car parts network for the Falcon, Fairlane and Torino.
