Fiat had built farm machinery in Turin since the 1910s; the type designations of the 1980s generation follow a power-class-plus-year pattern, such as 100-90 or 180-90 for the "-90" series introduced in 1984. The "-C" suffix (300, 312-C, 331-C) marks crawler versions (cingolato) for steep or poorly load-bearing ground. In 1991 Fiat's tractor division merged with Ford New Holland to form New Holland, and the Fiat brand disappeared from tractors during the second half of the 1990s.
