Fiat-Hitachi was from 1986 to 2002 the joint venture in which Fiat's construction division Fiatallis and Hitachi Construction Machinery built their excavators for Europe – at the San Mauro Torinese plant near Turin, with Hitachi designs of the EX range and Fiat sales; in 2002, after the CNH merger, the company passed into Fiat-Kobelco and then into New Holland Construction. The type logic follows Hitachi: EX stands for Excavator, the number gives the weight class in hundreds of kilograms – EX165 about 16.5 t, EX355 about 35 t, EX455 about 45 t – LC the long undercarriage (Long Crawler) with better stability, H the heavy-duty version, EL and BEH further undercarriage and equipment variants by factory logic. The engines are Isuzu diesels: the four-cylinder 4BG1 of 4.3 litres in the EX165, the six-cylinders 6SD1 of 9.8 litres and 6RB1 of 13.7 litres in the big models, at 2,000 to 2,300 rpm.

In the 1990s Fiat-Hitachi excavators were among the best-selling crawler excavators in Italy, France, Spain and Germany; technically they are Hitachi EX, which secures parts supply through Hitachi to this day.
