The Ducato has been Fiat's large van since 1981 and is the most-built vehicle of the Sevel plant in Atessa, where it rolls off the line as a twin of the Peugeot Boxer and Citroën Jumper (formerly also the Talbot Express and Alfa Romeo AR6). Four generations shape the register: the type 280/290 from 1981 to 1994 – recognisable by names such as '280 D41' or '290 MA7', many of them motorhome chassis – the type 230/244 from 1994 to 2006, the type 250 from 2006 with updates in 2014 and 2021, and the Multijet generations with 2.2 and 2.3 litre diesels.

The designations follow a fixed pattern: the number after the name gives the gross weight in hundreds of kilograms (28 = 2.8 t, 30 = 3.0 t, 33 = 3.3 t, 35 = 3.5 t, Maxi for the reinforced version), L1 to L4 the wheelbase or length, H1 to H3 the roof height, DC the crew cab, and suffixes such as JTD, Multijet or CNG the engine concept. In the register unladen weight runs from 1,452 to 3,290 kg, gross weight from 2,028 to 3,500 kg, displacement from 1,900 to 2,999 cm³ with four or five cylinders; where output is recorded it lies between 53 and 116 kW.
The length span from 4,660 to 8,000 mm shows why the Ducato underpins half of Europe's motorhome industry: panel van, chassis cab with dropside, cowl chassis for bodies and extended chassis all come from the same family.
On used examples, check rust protection at wheel arches and sills on the 230/244 types, the exhaust gas recirculation and particulate filter on all Multijets, and axle loads on motorhomes: many conversions use the full 3,500 kg.
