Epiroc's drum cutters go back to Erkat of Kirchardt in Baden-Württemberg, the specialist in transverse-head cutters that Epiroc – the mining and construction technology division spun off from Atlas Copco in 2018 – took over that same year. The code ER stands for Erkat Rotary, the number roughly for the carrier class: ER 50 and ER 100 for mini excavators of 1 to 3 t, ER 250 to ER 650 for excavators of 3 to 15 t, ER 1500 to ER 2000 for 15 to 30 t, ER 3000 to ER 5500 for heavy excavators of over 100 t. An appended x marks the version with reinforced gearbox and higher torque, xl the long version, ERC the trenching version with a modified cutter head, VC the cutters in vertical arrangement, CC the chain cutters for trenches and foundations.

The register lists 27 versions with service weights from 110 kg (ER 40x) to 7,000 kg (ER 5500) – the cutter's weight, together with its hydraulic demand, decides which excavator can carry and drive it.
Transverse-head cutters work with two drums across the boom axis and cut rock, concrete and frozen ground where blasting is prohibited and the hydraulic breaker is too loud or too coarse: tunnel profiling, trenching in rock, concrete demolition, wall refurbishment and underwater work are the fields.
On used cutters, wear of the conical picks and pick holders, the condition of gearbox and hydraulic motor (oil tightness, noise), the drum bearings and the fit of mounting plate and hydraulic connection to the excavator are what count.
