DKW was founded in 1916 as Zschopauer Motorenwerke in Saxony, became part of the newly formed Auto Union in 1932 alongside Audi, Horch and Wanderer, and stood for decades for two-stroke engines in motorcycles and small cars. After the war the West German Auto Union kept building two-strokes in Düsseldorf and Ingolstadt: the Munga as an off-road vehicle for the Bundeswehr and the federal border police from 1956 to 1968, and the Schnelllaster as a light front-wheel-drive van regarded as the forerunner of later German light commercials.

The Munga is one of the first independent off-road vehicles of the post-war Bundeswehr, before the VW Iltis replaced it from the mid-1960s, and is now a sought-after collector's vehicle of military-historical origin. The Schnelllaster was one of the first German front-wheel-drive vans of the post-war era; with Volkswagen's takeover of Auto Union in 1965 the brand's independent commercial-vehicle development ended.
On used examples of both types, the condition of the two-stroke engines counts – cylinder bores, lubrication, carburettors – along with rust on the frame, wings and floor panels; on the Munga also the axles, transfer case and differentials, on the Schnelllaster the front-drive shafts and the braking system.
