DAF XF — the number is the generation, the cab is the class

The XF's roots reach back to the DAF 95 of 1987. From it came the 95XF, replaced in 2003 by the XF 95, which was built until 2006. From 2005 the XF 105 followed, later the XF 106. The number after XF therefore denotes the generation — not displacement, not power.

At least as important is the cab. In 1985 DAF introduced the Space Cab on the 3600, setting new standards in interior space and driver comfort with its high roof. In 1994 came the Super Space Cab, the largest cab available in Europe; it differs from the others in interior equipment. Anyone looking for long-haul work usually wants exactly this version — and should see it explicitly confirmed in the offer.

With the engines it pays to read the name. DAF develops them and builds them in Eindhoven, but sells them as Paccar MX, not as DAF. The XF 105 came with an inline six of 12.9 litres, four valves per cylinder, intercooling and SCR technology at 510 hp. Newer vehicles carry the Paccar MX-11 at 450 hp and the MX-13 at 480 or 530 hp.

For the used market this means generation, cab and engine designation only make sense together. An XF 105 with MX-13 and Super Space Cab is a different vehicle from an XF 105 with a small cab — under an identical type designation.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
