DAF above 12 tonnes — which letter for which work
Class N3 is not a type designation but an official EU vehicle class: goods vehicles over 12 tonnes gross weight. Below it sit N2 from 3.5 to 12 tonnes and N1 up to 3.5 tonnes. At DAF this heaviest class holds most vehicles of the CF and XF ranges, plus the newer XD and XG.

DAF's letters describe the field of work, not the power. LF is the light range for distribution, CF the versatile middle class for regional, construction and mixed duty, XF the heavy long-haul range. Anyone looking for a tractor unit for long distances starts at the XF; anyone planning bodies, tippers or a crane starts at the CF.
In 2021 DAF renamed the range. The CF became the XD, and above the XF now sit the XG and XG+ with a larger cab. On the used market old and new names run side by side because both generations are offered at once. Anyone not searching the successor range misses half the listings.
The number after the letter long meant the engine at DAF, not the weight: 95XF, XF95, XF105, XF106 mark successive stages of the long-haul range. Mistaking one of those numbers for output leads badly astray — power is given separately, usually as a figure in horsepower or as an engine code.
When buying in this class the axle configuration counts at least as much as the range. 4x2 is the classic tractor unit, 6x2 carries more load at lower consumption, 6x4 and 8x4 belong on site. That figure is in the papers and is more reliable than any range designation.
