DAF began in 1928 in Eindhoven as Van Doorne's Aanhangwagen Fabriek – a trailer manufacturer, before the company later became the well-known lorry maker. The NVW series comes from that early trailer production: the type designation from NVW 6-12 to NVW 10-20 follows a clear pattern in which the second number states the gross weight in tonnes – NVW 10-20 thus stands for 20 t, NVW 6-12 for 12 t. The NL suffix on several models marks the axle count, VL a further build variant.
