DAF began in 1928 in Eindhoven as Van Doorne's Aanhangwagen Fabriek – a pure trailer maker, before the company later became the well-known truck manufacturer. The AW range comes from this early trailer production: the type designations AW 20-30 and AW 20-32 carry the gross weight rating in tonnes as the second number, so AW 20-32 stands for 32 tonnes, AW 20-30 for 30 tonnes; the NL and S suffixes mark further design variants.
