DAF was founded in Eindhoven in 1928 as Van Doorne's Aanhangwagen Fabriek and initially built trailers before the company moved into lorry production from 1949 and is today, as part of PACCAR, known above all for heavy trucks; the AT range represents this original trailer division. In the type code, the second number consistently gives the gross weight in tonnes – AT 12-18 is 18 tonnes, AT 18-27 is 27 tonnes – the leading number distinguishes further versions within these weight classes; the S, VL and NL suffixes denote additional equipment or body variants.

On a used purchase, the condition and load rating of the axles, the brake system and overrun brake, the drawbar and tow eye in conjunction with the towing vehicle, and rust on the chassis and body count; since these trailers can by now be several decades old, checking the chassis joints for fatigue cracks is additionally worthwhile.
