DAF AE – trailers and semi-trailers from the Dutch brand: 32 versions, unladen weight from 3,120 to 14,460 kg, gross weight up to 22,000 kg, widths up to 2,600 mm

DAF originally stood for "Van Doorne's Aanhangwagen Fabriek" (Van Doorne's Trailer Factory) – founded in 1928 in Eindhoven by the Van Doorne brothers as a machine works that began with steel cases and racking before moving into trailers and semi-trailers; by 1932 the name officially reflected trailer production, and only later did DAF become the truck manufacturer for which the brand is known today. The AE range in this register gathers trailers and semi-trailers with varying axle counts and payload classes; some model designations carry the suffix NL, pointing to the Dutch registration variant.

The register lists here 32 versions with unladen weights from 3,120 to 14,460 kg and a gross weight from 9,000 to 22,000 kg. Lengths, where recorded, range from 7,040 to 13,400 mm, and widths from 2,430 to 2,600 mm.

DAF is known today mainly as a truck brand (part of the PACCAR group), but its early focus on trailers and semi-trailers explains why the brand also appears in vehicle registers for standalone trailers. The AE range sits in the heavy segment, between classic semi-trailers and full trailers for European long-haul transport, with weight classes spanning medium-heavy to genuinely heavy-duty trailers.

When buying a used trailer of this class, check the frame and axles (corrosion, welded joints), the braking system (load-sensing valve, linings), the coupling and drawbar eye, and the condition of the tarpaulin or body; on the older, smaller AE types it is worth checking axle suspension and tyres, and on the heavier versions the frame reinforcements and trailer brake. Spare parts are available through the general trailer parts trade, while original DAF trailer parts from the 1970s and 1980s are now hard to find.

What to check before buying

  • Search the frame and welds at the axle mounts — that is where cracks start.
  • Check the brakes and the last inspection in the papers.
  • Work the gross weight against the towing vehicle before buying.
  • Compare the chassis number with the papers.
  • Look at the floor, cover or body from the inside — rust does not show from outside.
