DAF, the Van Doorne's Automobiel Fabriek, was founded in 1928 in Eindhoven by brothers Hub and Wim van Doorne as a trailer factory and began building its own trucks in 1949. The A range was one of the company's early truck programmes; the number 1600 in the type designation places the range in a weight or power class, while the following letter-and-number combinations, such as DA 360 or DD 490, mark individual drivetrain and engine variants. Over these decades DAF gradually moved its commercial-vehicle range from licensed and bought-in components to an increasing share of its own engineering.
