Cummins X15 – the 14.9-litre six-cylinder for heavy tractors since 2017: 400 to 605 hp, Efficiency and Performance Series
The X15 is Cummins' heavy in-line six for North American Class 8 – tractor units, dump trucks, concrete mixers and heavy haul. It replaced the ISX15 in 2017, kept its 14.9 litres of displacement, but received new injection, turbocharger and aftertreatment and was offered in two configurations: the Efficiency Series for long-haul at low revs and the Performance Series for heavy haul and vocational work. The number in the name is the output in hp – X15 400 to X15 605 – and appended letters such as ST, SA, V, EV or EX mark torque curves and calibrations for particular transmissions and duties.

The register lists 36 versions with 400 to 605 hp at 1,698 to 1,966 rpm, all with 14,900 cm³, direct injection and turbocharging. Peak torque lies between 1,650 and 1,950 lb-ft (2,237 to 2,644 Nm) and is reached between 900 and 1,150 rpm – a low torque speed which, together with the tall axle ratios of the Efficiency Series, lowers fuel consumption. The certifications cover model years 2017 to 2026, with 'Tractor and Vocational' as the application.
The EPA data specify ultra-low-sulphur diesel of 7 to 15 ppm; aftertreatment to US EPA 2017 combines diesel oxidation catalyst, particulate filter and SCR with urea. From 2024 the X15 has been developed further as part of Cummins' 'HELM' platform, which uses the same base engine for diesel, natural gas (X15N) and hydrogen.
For operators and used buyers, calibration and power rating (changeable by software later, but relevant to certification), the condition of the aftertreatment and the service history with Cummins' extended oil-change intervals are what count.
