Alongside the Ford Aerostar, the Astro was one of the few true body-on-frame, rear-drive vans on the American market of the 1980s and 1990s, positioned between the compact front-drive vans and full-size Chevrolet vans such as the Express; the four-wheel-drive version and its high towing capacity made it a popular tow vehicle for boat and camping trailers.
On a used Astro, rust on the sills, wheel arches and brake lines, the condition of the transfer case and four-wheel-drive clutch on 4WD versions, the mileage and condition of the 4.3-litre V6, and the seal of the heater core, a known weak point, all count; parts are widely available through the GM network and the US parts trade.
