Caterpillar articulated dump trucks – from the DJB takeover in 1985 via D250 to D400 to the 725 to 745 and the underground AD: 163 to 460 kW
Caterpillar's articulated dump trucks go back to the English maker DJB of Peterlee, which had built articulated haulers with Cat engines and axles since the 1970s; in 1985 Caterpillar took over the plant and the range joined the yellow line-up as the D25, D30, D35 and D40 – the number for the payload in short tons. The 1990s generations D250B, D300B, D350C/D and D400D continued that logic until Caterpillar switched in 2000 to the three-digit designations 725, 730, 735, 740 and later 745, whose number likewise marks the payload class (725 about 24 t, 745 about 41 t). Appended letters B and C are generations; EJ or Ejector denotes the ejector body, which unloads without tipping – for work under power lines or in buildings.

Separate from these are the AD30, AD40, AD45B and AD55: Caterpillar's underground mining trucks with low height and reinforced frame, the AE40 as the ejector version. In the register the models run from 163 to 460 kW, powered by Cat six-cylinders of 9,292 to 18,132 cm³ – from the older 3306 and 3406 via the 3408E to the C13, C15 and C18 ACERT – with lengths of 8,763 to 11,592 mm, widths of 2,502 to 3,770 mm and heights of 2,550 to 5,000 mm.
Articulated haulers carry their load on three driven axles with oscillating movement and therefore get through sites where a rigid-frame truck would bog down – the body is smaller than on the 770 series, but the terrain can be almost anything.
On used trucks, operating hours, play in the articulation joint and axle mounts, the condition of body cylinders and body floor and the tyres, which on these vehicles are the largest single item of operating cost, are what count.
