Netam Fruehauf ONCR – Dutch semi-trailer maker from the Fruehauf group: 31 versions, unladen weight from 3,700 to 26,120 kg, gross weight up to 39,000 kg

Netam Fruehauf was the Dutch branch of the Fruehauf group, tracing back to August Fruehauf's 1914 Detroit coupling of a towing vehicle with a load-bearing trailer – the invention of the semi-trailer. In 1946 Fruehauf, together with a French partner, set up its first European subsidiary, and in 1987/88 the European subsidiaries – Fruehauf France, Crane Fruehauf in Great Britain, Ackermann Fruehauf in Germany and Netam Fruehauf in the Netherlands – were brought together under one roof. This collective page lists models of the ONCR range.

The register lists here 31 versions with unladen weights from 3,700 to 26,120 kg at a gross weight of 12,000 to 39,000 kg. Lengths range from 11,200 to 14,000 mm, and widths from 2,480 to 2,600 mm.

With lengths of around 12 to 14 metres and gross weights up to 39 tonnes, the ONCR range corresponds to classic semi-trailers for European long-haul transport, as built under the Fruehauf name from the 1950s in several European countries under licence or through subsidiaries. The Fruehauf name is still associated with the basic form of the modern semi-trailer.

When buying a used semi-trailer of this generation, check the frame and chassis rails (corrosion, deformation), the condition of the axles and braking system, the kingpin and landing legs, and the tightness of the tarpaulin or body; on older model years, also check any retrofitted braking technology. Original parts for the historic Netam Fruehauf semi-trailers are now hard to find, while common axle and brake components can be sourced through the general parts trade.

What to check before buying

  • Search the frame and welds at the axle mounts — that is where cracks start.
  • Check the brakes and the last inspection in the papers.
  • Work the gross weight against the towing vehicle before buying.
  • Compare the chassis number with the papers.
  • Look at the floor, cover or body from the inside — rust does not show from outside.
