Branson is the export brand of Kukje Machinery of Okcheon in South Korea, one of the three Korean tractor makers alongside Daedong (Kioti) and LS; since 1998 Branson Tractors of Rome, Georgia, has sold the machines in North America, where they compete in the compact-tractor class with Kubota, Kioti, Mahindra and the small John Deeres. The type logic: the first two digits give roughly the hp class – 2900 about 29 hp, 3625 about 36 hp, 6225 about 62 hp – the last ones the model generation, h stands for the hydrostatic transmission, C for the cab version, R for the version with roll bar and no cab; the K78 is the largest model at about 78 hp. The engines are Kukje's own three- and four-cylinder diesels of 1.2 to 3.4 litres – unlike most competitors, which buy engines in.

On used tractors, operating hours, the condition of hydrostat and clutch, front loader and hydraulics, four-wheel-drive clutch, on C models the cab and air conditioning and parts supply, which runs through TYM and the Branson importers, are what count.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Load the hydraulics and watch for sag.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
