S denotes the lighter chassis variant with single tyres on the rear axle, rated up to 3.5 tonnes gross vehicle weight. C marks chassis fitted throughout with twin rear tyres, spanning roughly 3.5 to 6.5 tonnes depending on the derivative — a 35C14 therefore carries the same weight class as a comparable S type but sits on the sturdier C chassis, which is also used for heavier derivatives such as the 65C15. That is why two vans sharing the same first number can differ noticeably in springs, brakes and frame strength.

The trailing digits are not a horsepower rating but a power-step code that is reassigned from one generation to the next. In the third generation (1999–2006), the code 12, as in 35C12 or 35S12, denoted the 2.3-litre diesel rated at 116 hp, or 85 kW. When buying a used Daily, what matters is not the badge on the listing but the figures on the registration document: gross vehicle weight, axle loads and actual engine output. Motorhome converters tend to favour the lighter S chassis with single rear tyres because it leaves more payload for the habitation module at the same kerb weight, whereas operators running constant heavy loads more often choose the C chassis with twin tyres. Because S and C chassis use different leaf springs, brakes and sometimes axles, always match the full code, including the letter and the trailing digits, before ordering parts.
