Mercedes-Benz Viano – the comfort-oriented long version of the Vito, four-cylinder CDI and V6 engines, 110 to 160 kW, 2.1 to 3.7 litres displacement, gross weights up to 3.05 tonnes, built 2003 to 2014

The Mercedes-Benz Viano is the comfort- and trim-oriented long version of the Vito van (W639 series), which Mercedes-Benz built from 2003 to 2014 at its Vitoria plant in Spain as a van for families, shuttle and chauffeur services. The type designation follows the brand's CDI logic: figures such as 2.0, 2.2 or 3.0 ahead of the CDI abbreviation give the displacement of the common-rail diesel engine, while 3.5 denotes the six-cylinder petrol engine; the 4-Matic suffix marks the all-wheel-drive variant. The Viano shared its platform with the Vito but differed with a longer wheelbase, independent rear suspension and a more upmarket interior with up to seven individual seats.

The register lists 32 versions with 110 to 160 kW from four- and six-cylinder engines of 2,140 to 3,724 cm³. Unladen weights range from 1,802.5 to 2,510 kg, gross vehicle weights from 2,770 to 3,050 kg, lengths from 4,871.5 to 5,250 mm and widths from 1,810 to 2,000 mm.

As a comfortable people carrier on a commercial-vehicle base, the Viano competed with the Volkswagen Multivan and the Chrysler Voyager, and also found use as an airport and hotel shuttle vehicle and as a base for ambulance and disabled-access conversions.

When buying used, what counts on the CDI engines is the condition of the turbocharger, intake manifold and injectors, on the V6 petrol engines oil consumption, plus corrosion on sliding-door tracks and the floor, the condition of the independent rear suspension, and the electronics and seat rails of the elaborate interior. Spare parts run through the Mercedes-Benz Vans dealer network.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
