Mercedes-Benz GLK – the brand's first compact SUV: boxy X204 body, CDI and BlueTEC diesels through six-cylinder petrol, 105 to 225 kW, built 2008 to 2015 in Bremen

The GLK was Mercedes-Benz's first compact SUV, built on the C-Class (W204) platform and produced from 2008 to 2015 at the Bremen plant, continuing in China until 2018. Unlike the brand's later SUVs, it carried a deliberately boxy body styled after the G-Class. The type designation's three-digit number gives the approximate power class, CDI and BlueTEC mark the diesel engines, and 4MATIC the standard all-wheel drive; the range topped out with the six-cylinder petrol GLK 350. In 2015 the GLC replaced the GLK in Europe, though the GLK remained in the range as a separate model for the Chinese market.

The register lists here 12 versions with outputs from 105 to 225 kW, displacements from 2,143 to 3,498 cm³ across four to six cylinders, unladen weights from 1,730 to 2,025 kg, gross weights from 2,412.5 to 2,500 kg, a length of 4,528 to 4,664 mm and a width of 1,800 to 1,860 mm.

The GLK competed against the first-generation BMW X3, the Audi Q5 and the Land Rover Freelander, and deliberately set itself apart from its rounder rivals with its boxy, off-road-inspired styling. It stayed in the range longer in North America and China than in Europe, where the GLC replaced it after a single generation.

On a used example, check the injectors and particulate filter on the early CDI diesels, the shift behaviour of the 7G-Tronic automatic, the AIRMATIC air suspension on cars so equipped, rust on the wheel arches, and the timing chain of the M272 and M276 six-cylinder petrol engines; parts run through the Mercedes-Benz network.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
