The Actros 1845 illustrates the coding principle: the first two digits, here 18, state the gross weight the chassis is designed for, in tonnes. The last two digits, here 45, denote engine power in steps of 10 hp, so around 450 hp. An Actros 1845 is therefore an 18-tonne chassis rated at roughly 450 hp, as also shown by a documented Actros 1845 LS with a permissible combination weight of 40 tonnes. The same logic applies to the Arocs, Antos and Atego, even though different numeric ranges appear there.

One or two letters follow the number to describe the body configuration, rooted in Mercedes' historical naming system. S denotes an articulated tractor unit; L on its own marks the base chassis without a fifth-wheel coupling, used under flatbed, box or special bodies; and the combination LS accordingly identifies an articulated tractor unit. K indicates a short chassis, typical of tipper bodies and site vehicles, as in the Arocs 3245 LK designation. The same letter combinations appear across the Actros, Arocs and Antos ranges and say more about intended use than the series name alone.

When buying used, it pays to check the full code rather than just the series name: an Actros 1845 LS is a different vehicle from an Actros 2545, even within the same series, because gross weight and engine power differ substantially. A buyer looking for a long-haul tractor unit should look for LS variants with matching horsepower, while someone needing a site vehicle should look for K designations with a short wheelbase. The weight figure implied by the code can differ from the gross weight actually entered on the registration document, since the code describes the factory-intended configuration rather than the actual registration. Cross-checking against the vehicle papers therefore remains necessary before relying on the digits in the type name alone.

Atego and Antos overlap partly in distribution transport but differ in weight range: according to manufacturer material, the Atego spans roughly 6.5 to 16 tonnes and is used for tasks such as horticulture, furniture transport or parcel distribution, while the Antos from around 18 tonnes is intended for food, refrigerated goods, beverage, tank and silo transport. The Arocs, in turn, replaced the earlier construction-specification Actros as the dedicated site-vehicle series. For a buyer, this means the series name alone already indicates the rough weight class and primary intended use, before even checking the alphanumeric code.
