Magirus-Deutz Mercur – a heavy truck of the 1950s and 1960s: air-cooled Deutz six-cylinder diesel of 7.4 litres, unladen weight up to 8.8 tonnes, also as 4x4

Magirus-Deutz was formed in 1936 from the merger of the Ulm fire-engine and commercial-vehicle maker Magirus with the Cologne engine builder Klöckner-Humboldt-Deutz and was known for its air-cooled diesel engines, which needed no cooling water or antifreeze. Mercur was one of the brand's heavy truck ranges in the 1950s and 1960s; the model designation 125A4X4 in this register points to a four-wheel-drive version, F and FL to different cab or body variants.

The register lists 7 versions in this range with unladen weights of 5,230 to 8,840 kg, gross weights of 10,000 to 11,500 kg, lengths of 5,260 to 9,470 mm and widths of 2,180 to 2,400 mm; the recorded displacement is 7,413 cm³ from a six-cylinder.

The air-cooled Magirus-Deutz trucks of this era were common in long-haul transport and construction, and their trouble-free cooling system also made them sought after in hot, dusty operating regions outside Europe; the distinctive, far-forward cab front shaped the brand's image.

When buying a used example of these Magirus-Deutz trucks, checks include the condition of the fan and drive belts of the air-cooling system, rust on the cab and frame, the function of the drum brakes and, on four-wheel-drive versions, the transfer case and axle drives; parts are carried by workshops and clubs specialising in historic commercial vehicles.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
